Architectural technicians work closely with construction professionals to ensure that construction designs are usable and practical. The development of design proposals and the preparation of plans, drawings and specifications are all an important part of the job
This type of work is suitable for someone with good interpersonal and team-working skills. A drawing ability and competency in using programmes such as AutoCad and Photoshop are also needed. The work-based entry into the profession would require a minimum of five GCSEs. Progression is usually subject to an HNC/D in architectural design or technology.
The degree pathway requires a bacherlor’s approved by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT). Diplomas in construction are also useful for this type of work. Alternatively, entry could be achieved through an Advanced Apprenticeship in construction
Starting salaries are around £18,000 a year, but could be as high as £22,000. With three years’ experience, architectural technicians can expect to earn up to £30,000.

Many employers offering Architectural Technician jobs also offer apprenticeship schemes. Candidates for these courses must be over 16 or 18 years old and have four GCSE´s/S grades (A-C/1-3) in Science, Math, English, Engineering, Design Technology, Art and Applied ICT. Other job placements require candidates with previous academic awards such as a Higher National Diploma or a Higher National Certificate in Architectural Technology or Architectural Design. These courses require three GCSE’s/S grades (A-C/1-3) or two A levels/two H grades.

Apprenticeship schemes have awards available including BTEC/SQA or NVQ/SVQ awards. Examples of these qualifications are the BTEC/SQA in Architectural Design or Architectural Technology and the NVQ/SVQ level 4 in Architectural Technology.
