Specific duties depend on an individual’s specialism but may involve researching legal information, communicating with clients, preparing legal documents, drawing up wills and representing clients in court. Both part-time and full-time work is available, with trainee salaries between £16,000 and £20,000 per annum. For those with experience, earnings of over £50,000 are possible
To qualify, candidates must be a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives (ILEX), which requires taking a series of ILEX exams, as well as gaining practical legal experience by working as a clerk in a law firm. Completing the ILEX exams part-time takes a minimum of four years, or nine months for those with a bachelor’s or postgraduate degree in law. With experience, it is possible to progress to the role of practice manager within a law firm or to qualify as a solicitor.
