Advocate

An advocate is an independent Scottish lawyer who works closely with solicitors in an advisory role and who takes on the job of conducting prosecution and defence in a court of law. It is the same job as a barrister does in the rest of the UK. Advocates are commonly self-employed and will charge solicitors for their time
The work regularly includes liaising with solicitors and other professionals and preparing cases, representing clients in the courts and other legal arenas and providing legal advice and consulting with other lawyers and professional bodies
Training for this type of work is lengthy and expensive; part of it involves working full-time for no wage. However, it can be extremely rewarding and these professionals are part of an elite group. Skills required include motivation and self confidence as well as integrity and discretion. Excellent communication skills are a must as is attention to detail and the ability to work well with others. Salaries tend to be between £25,000 and £35,000 per year, rising to £60,000 or more with experience.
