Assistant Buyer

An assistant buyer is responsible for helping with the purchasing of products for any given industry, but they are usually most jobs are usually found within the fashion and home ware labels. Knowledge of trends is essential for this position, as it is necessary to predict what consumers will buy at least a season ahead, although the chief buyer will most likely make the final decision on products
Jobs are available in retail outlets such as boutiques or department stores. The employee may be responsible for assisting in a specific department or the store as a whole, depending on the size of the establishment. An assistant buyer should maintain up to date information about economic and purchasing trends and be willing to speak their mind about fresh ideas
A person in this role needs to monitor market activity by visiting competitors and establishing critical paths for merchandise. It is essential that they are creative and have organisational skills, as well as the confidence to present new ideas effectively.
Employees usually work 40 hours a week and may need to work overtime during peak periods. Applicants with degrees in market research, merchandising, fashion and art will be preferred, but a strong knowledge of the industry is the most important asset. The average salary for this position is £25,000 per year.
