Job positions that involve buying products include clothes buyers, art buyers, media buyers and many more. Clothes buyers are responsible for purchasing items for retail outlets and must be able to predict new trends at least a season ahead. This job position requires knowledge of fashion and a creative mind
Buyers can work at boutiques, department stores or individual design labels. This position may require the employee to buy clothes for the whole store of for a single department such as children’s wear. Responsibilities include staying up to date with economic and customer buying trends and keeping one step ahead of the competition
Skills such as researching, marketing and an eye for design are essential. Buyers should know how to draw up purchasing contracts and negotiate cheap prices as well as process invoices and order sheets.
This job usually requires 40 hours of work a week and hours may increase during busy periods such as the launch of a new collection. Requirements for this position are a university degree and experience in retail. Applicants with a background in marketing, merchandising, fashion and art will be the most attractive. The average salary that can be expected in the UK is £30,000 a year.
