Dietetics is a broad field of healthcare, relating to the use of nutritional data in order to provide health advice to the general public. Those interested in the field can enter the profession as a dietetic assistant, before moving up to the level of dietician and consequently, a more highly-paid head of dietetics position
A number of roles in the field are offered by the NHS, where many of those working in dietetics concentrate on specialist areas, such as children’s nutrition. Positions are available in a range of healthcare settings, where dieticians work alongside GP’s, in order to work out patients’ specific dietary needs. Others work in the education and media sectors, raising awareness of the links between nutrition and all-round good health.
Dietetic assistant positions don’t need any specialist qualifications, since all training is provided on the job. However, those keen to progress in the profession will need to undertake some further study, such as a degree, or postgraduate diploma, in dietetics. This enables dieticians to register with the Health Professions Council (HPC), a mandatory requirement to work at this level. The average UK salary for dieticians is just over £22,000.
