Ecologist

The position of ecologist involves study of the relationship between organisms and their specific environments within ecosystems as a whole. The sector is represented by many diverse specialities, dependent on the environment studied, including marine, the many terrestrial ecosystems such as rainforest, desert, and coastal along with the flora, fauna or sea life in each region. A key function of the job is preparing impact assessments to ensure planned developments are in compliance with environmental laws before planning permission is granted.
Generally, key tasks are dependent on the employment sector, and can involve the classification of species and organisms, habitat and other field surveys including aerial photography, environmental impact surveys and the creation of new habitats and their management, as well as the monitoring of protected species. Entry requirement include an honours degree in an aspect of biological science such as marine biology, conservation biology or applied life sciences. Previous work experience as a volunteer is essential at entry-level.
Basic graduate entry-level salaries start at £15,000 dependent on qualifications and volunteer experience and can rise to £45,000 or higher in senior positions.
