Geotechnical

Geotechnical engineers work closely with the environment in the area of civil engineering construction and design solutions. They apply their knowledge of engineering geology, rock and soil mechanics and foundation engineering to supply extremely accurate calculations to teams of professionals working on structures such as airport runways, tunnels and dams
To assess the suitability of a site for a particular client’s needs, engineers will collect data; produce models, often using computer software; and come up with calculations which will then be applied to the structure being built. They are likely to split their time between conducting research in the field and preparing project proposals in the office
As they work closely with a team of structural engineers, construction engineers, hydrologists and clients, it is important they have excellent communication skills. Good computer design skills are also essential. A civil engineering degree or a minimum of a BSc in a discipline such as ground engineering, engineering geology or geotechnical engineering is required for this type of job. Salaries average around £32,500 per year depending on experience.
