Loss Adjusting

A loss adjuster deals with insurance claims, either on property or a person’s health. It is the job of an adjuster to accurately maintain just how liable an insurance company is for any damage and how much should be paid out to rectify that damage. Loss adjusting deals with two types of claim. One is property, where an assessment is made of damage done to buildings, and the other is liability, which deals with personal injury and any damage done to property, for example a car, by a third party
Those working in this area will usually work for an insurance firm or loss adjusting company. There are also public adjusters who work on behalf of the policy holder in the event that there is a disagreement between the holder and the company they are insured with. Good attention to detail is essential, as accurate records need to be kept, as well as good communication skills
Insurance companies will often look for applicants with a degree in subjects like economics, law and mathematics. Salaries start at around £15,000 per year, rising quickly with experience.
