Podiatry

Working with patients in hospitals or clinics, the podiatrist will have a full understanding of lower limb and foot healthcare. Podiatry workers will be newly qualified or experienced as a chiropodist/podiatrist and be registered with the Health Professions Council.
Administering local anaesthetics, removal or part-removal of nails and giving sound advice in regards to wound management, rheumatology, diabetes and biomechanics is a must. Knowledge of corrective footwear and physiotherapy is a bonus and effective diagnosis is a key requirement in podiatry.
The podiatrist will be required to prescribe medications, and be able to deal with electrosurgery, cryotherapy, orthotics, exercise therapies and ultrasonics. Treatments can range from ointments to invasive surgery. The candidate will have excellent communication skills and will most often deal with elderly people, diabetes sufferers and those at risk of amputation
Depending on experience, those working in podiatry can expect a salary ranging between £20,500 and £35,000. The higher range is more commonly seen for those living in Central London and for more experienced podiatrists.
