Advocacy

People working in the field of advocacy for humanitarian organisations and trusts and charities are at the forefront of a profession that ensures all people receive the same basic rights. Advocates are respected for their drive in getting local authorities and the government to respect civil rights.
Successful candidates for advocacy positions might find themselves working on behalf of immigration detainees, prison inmates, climate change organisations or handicapped people. Issues that an advocate might get involved in are changes of accommodation or institution and medical treatment or disagreements over freedoms and right of representation.
Incumbents will be expected to have a background in a counselling or advisory capacity and a BA or BSc degree in community services or equivalent. Requisite attributes for applicants are creative thinking, self motivation, good communication and persuasion skills and an inherent desire to work for the empowerment of less privileged members of society.
Organisations and non-profit foundations throughout the UK need professionals who are prepared to take on these demanding roles. Salaries range from around £20,000 up to £35,000 for team leaders.
