In recent times, the life expectancy of UK residents has increased substantially. As people are living longer, it has also meant that the amount of care needed by the elderly has risen. Many of these elderly people who need care are not quite ready to move into residential care homes, but need still need some daily assistance. In these cases, home carers play a key role in providing care to the elderly in their own homes
Carers’ duties may include supervising medication, personal care, cooking, as well as other household chores. Experience in the field is an advantage, but not always necessary. Qualities such as commitment, patience, compassion and reliability are just as important
Many home carer positions are advertised at an hourly rate, around £7 to £12 an hour depending on location. These positions suit those who are looking for flexible working hours on a part-time basis. Own transport is usually required, in order that carers can visit several homes during the day. On the other hand, a small number of carers are also employed on a full-time, live-in basis.
