Machinist

A proficient machinist holds a crucial position in manufacturing and metal fabrication plants. An individual’s experience with plant machines and the ability to resolve problems directly impacts on how quickly the finished product is ready to be utilised or dispatched.
Job candidates with a background of operating lathes, drills and milling machines as well as computer programme driven ones are in high demand throughout the UK. Successful applicants are expected to be able to read blueprints, prepare their machines for the job, calibrate settings, use hand tools, fabricate the requisite parts and ensure they match the original specifications.
A machinist’s role is suitable for those with a mechanical aptitude and good maths. Incumbents will have completed an apprenticeship or an on the job NVQ course in engineering.
Salaries range from about £13,000 a year for trainees up to £25,000 for experienced setters. Incumbents might be asked to work shifts, for which there are often extra payments. Openings exist in many parts of the country, but are mostly around major cities such as Leeds, Birmingham and London.
