News

News has an important role to play in every aspect of modern living so working in the industry is demanding but rewarding work. Those in the front line news arena can expect to be on call for any event or occurrence. That can be a local or national story, and can be delivered to the public via radio, television, in the morning newspaper or online. Those working in the industry are expected to be sharp, good communicators and have an eye for a good story
The best jobs in this industry are the ones for the television companies, especially the cable and satellite organisations. They have a raft of news types ranging from sports to politics, so there is a choice of discipline for the prospective applicant. TV reporters are well trained in speaking to the camera, and organisations such as the BBC give specific training after a graduate has been hired. There is a specific skill in reporting an event to camera which does not apply to other media formats.
An inquiring mind and the ability to probe with another question are also good attributes of the modern reporter, who can command a salary of between £25,000 and £40,000.
