Occupational Therapist

Working in the community, in residential homes, as well as in the nursing or hospital environment the occupational therapist will work closely with GP practices, industrial organisations, prisons and healthcare centres to undertake physicals, and work on interaction, communication and cognitive skills of patients. Planning and carrying out treatments, arranging advice and support for family members as well as carrying out administrative tasks in relation to client records will also be required.
An occupational therapist needs to have an accredited degree as well as a postgraduate qualification in the relevant subjects. The candidate will be required to have exceptional communication skills, be organised and be able to form good working relationships with patients and other healthcare workers.
A junior occupational therapist can expect an annual salary of around £21,000 and with more experience or a higher level of relevant education, the figure can rise to £29,500, excluding any bonuses. A good pension scheme is to be expected and four weeks holiday per year is the norm.

  • Government help Nettie

Can I get any support from the state if I want to qualify as an occupational therapist?

    • Lily:

I think there’s a possibility to ask for funding from the nhs to help you pay for your course fees and also your living expenses.

      • Nettie:

Great! Do you know where I can find detailed information to see if I qualify?

        • Lily:

Not sure, I’ve heard about it but I have never looked anywhere.

          • Adam:

the national career service may be able to help you there.

    • Nettie:

Than you Lily and Adam. I’ve found plenty detail in the NCS web page, really interesting!
