By observing, testing and performing radiotherapy treatment, the radiographer plays a vital role in the oncology department. Working with the oncology team, the radiographer will help diagnose, X-ray and treat cancers with targeted doses of radiation to destroy tumours and diseased tissue. The candidate will then deliver a course of post-treatment care and follow-up procedures for the patient.
Exceptional communication with sensitive data is required, as well as developing a trusting relationship with the patient and their family. Formal training is required to become a radiographer and a Bachelors degree in radiologic technology is a must. The candidate must also undergo continuous education as technologies advance. The opportunity may arise to advance into MRI scanning, mammography and CT scans.
Junior candidates can expect an annual salary of £21,539, which then, with experience, rises to around £32,623 including bonuses. The opportunity to achieve a more senior role and become a supervisor is the usual progression.
