Promoting a health and safety culture in the workplace is a key part of any modern business. In this case, many larger businesses employ officers in specialised roles, in order to fulfil this brief. They not only ensure that all regulations are followed, but work closely with directors and employees to apply other measures which can minimise operational and physical loss
This profession has grown rapidly and will continue to grow in the future, as more stringent workplace controls come into place. Therefore, increasing numbers of positions are expected to become available in the sector.
Most work is based in the office, but onsite work is common in manufacturing and construction environments. Officers and advisors should be flexible, able to accommodate training needs, or respond to emergency call-outs, outside normal office hours
Graduates tend to earn between £33,000 and £36,000 after about 10 years in the profession, while the average UK salary is £37,500. Graduates of all disciplines can enter the profession, but degrees in engineering, life science or health studies might offer some advantages.
