Bicycle Mechanic
There are an estimated 20 million cycles in the UK and at some point in their lives all will require maintenance or repair. The boom in the use of pedal power in the country has led to unprecedented demand for proficient bicycle mechanics.
A bicycle mechanic is expected to be able to assemble bicycles, affix accessories, replace worn out parts, mend punctures, align wheels and carry out routine maintenance to ensure the bicycle runs smoothly. Job-holders may also be required to offer sales and repair advice to potential customers.
Successful applicants need to be self motivated, able to work unsupervised and display a mechanical aptitude. Good communication skills are a pre-requisite for many of the jobs as these positions require extensive interaction with customers. No formal school qualifications are required, although a Cytech level 1, 2 or 3 may open a few extra doors.
Openings for cycle technicians can be found in most areas of the UK, with vacancies at independent retailers, national chains, and hire and adventure sports centres. Pay packages range from the national minimum wage to around £14,500 a year.
