They are responsible for repairing, maintaining and diagnosing performance and problems associated with heavy goods vehicles. They may be employed by public transport firms, private garages or major firms with large delivery fleets
Duties associated with this extremely hands-on position include replacing parts, running diagnostic programs, changing fluids, performing inspections, assembling and reassembling engines and major systems.
The trade requires in-depth knowledge of diesel and petrol automotive engines and systems including specialised air brakes, hydraulics and others associated with HGV vehicles. Training and certification is typically done via technical colleges, vocational schools and/or colleges
A HGV Mechanic working in Britain will typically see a per annum salary ranging anywhere from between about £20,000 to £30,000. The average figure is around £23,000 per year, though most London-based mechanics with at least some experience will see higher figures.
