Electrical Technician

Electrical technicians make up over a third of all engineering technicians. They are responsible for the designing, testing, maintaining and repairing of a wide range of electrical equipment, from computers to medical monitoring machines.
As well as carrying out basic electrical work, technicians may specialise in a certain area, such as research and development or computer programs. There are opportunities in quality control, which involves the inspection and testing of products to make sure they meet certain safety and quality standards. Other avenues of work include construction, education, the Armed Forces, civil engineering and environmental engineering
Employers usually ask for a City & Guilds qualification, such as City & Guilds Level 3 in Electrical Installation, although many electrical technicians are self-employed. Either way, it is important to gain as much experience as possible in the chosen electrical area in order to increase chances of employment. Average salaries for the London region are around £31,000 per annum, with a countrywide average of £24,400.
