Adult Education

A professional working in adult education undertakes a different role from one who works with younger learners. Adult learners are usually a lot more self-directed, and thus different skills are required in order to teach them effectively.
Usually adults have a need to know how the information that they are learning will be of benefit to them before they begin. Therefore, it is important for adult education professionals to make the benefits clear from the start. Teachers in this field will be required to possess good leadership skills, excellent communication skills and the ability to convey information both clearly and concisely.
Most institutions will expect teachers to have a formal academic background in the subject they are to teach. This is usually an undergraduate degree in the relevant subject field. Preference is usually given to those who possess teaching qualifications such as a PGCE or a number of years’ teaching experience.
The average salary range for this role is between £18,000 and £25,000.
