Ceiling Fixer

Important to the construction and building maintenance industry is the ceiling fixer, who fits suspended ceilings to conceal electrical and pipe-work systems. Most of the work takes place at new or renovated commercial developments like shops, offices, and factories and in public sector projects such as hospitals and schools.
This person’s main task is to follow technical drawings and written instructions to lay out, cut, and install a framework of aluminium supports at the existing ceiling or the underside of the floor above. These individuals typically work from ladders, platforms, or scaffolding. Ceiling fixers might also be asked to fit insulation materials into the ceiling before installing any panels. Many people in this field also work with raised flooring systems and detachable wall and floor partitions.
This type of work is mainly indoors and typically requires working at heights, often in confined spaces and it involves lifting, bending, carrying, and climbing ladders. Travelling between work sites is common, so a driver’s licence may be required. Most employers ask for GCSEs/S qualifications, or coursework in maths, design, or technology.
Trainees in this field typically earn £7,100 - £13,000 per year. Those with proper qualifications can earn £16,600 - £20,000. Experienced workers often make up to £25,000 per year.

  • Help please Tom

Does somebody know what to expect from a ceiling fixing career? I’m quite fit and used to manual work and I’ve heard the pay can be good…

    • Rod:

It’s a job that needs you to be reasonably fit, often enough you work at height from ladders or scaffolding and sometimes in confined spaces. The working hours are the regular ones, unless you’re self-employed, then you can decide to do more or to do less. The pay will depend on your skills or experience. From your question, you must be at entry level, this means in the region of 16k, with experience you can get to 25-30k.
