I’m 56 and lost my job a few month ago and I’m finding it very difficult to find a new job. I was in charge of a home décor shop. I feel I’d like to try and work in a charity shop, I think I could do a good job, and I have the gut feeling I’ll love doing it knowing that there’s a good ultimate end to it. My doubt is whether charities do only take on volunteers for their shops.

    • I’ve worked for a charity for the last two summers during college break and I had my wages. I assume other shops may have better wages, but I like it there. I’d say each shop is different. I recommend that you contact one/some and find out through them. Good luck, you never know, me might coincide some day!

      • Than you for your feedback Leah. I’ll do as you say, it makes sense. It’d be amazing if we did coincide sometime, wouldn’t it? What area are you in? I’m looking in Bolton, in the North West.

    • Hi Evelyn. I'm an assistant manager in a charity shop, and most charity shops have a salaried manager and assistant manager, with some also having a salaried general assistant on top of volunteers if it's a big shop. They also mostly like to recruit someone with a background of charity or fundraising. I had done quite a bit of fund raising for CF years ago and got the job. I've been in retail over 40 years, and working in a charity is shop is so differant. I wanted to make the change and am glad I did. It is rewarding, but very hard work. Good luck!

      • Many thanks Mary, very clarifying. As regards the job itself, I don't mind hard work, especially if I know that there's a purpose beyond the mere practical side of business. I think I'll do well, now all I need is a bit of luck. Cheers and thanks again for your reply!
