There are numerous avenues of employment for skilled professionals known as a chemist; they can find work in many industries ranging from oil & gas to pharmaceuticals.
Jobholders in this position are generally responsible for preparing, testing and analysing solutions, reagents and compounds for consumer, governmental or industrial use. This will typically involve developing and improving formulas, testing processes/clinical trials and the use of a wide range of equipment including computers and devices that provide heat, light, chemical catalysts and energy in developmental, testing and production processes
The exact nature of the work varies between industries and the individual’s specialisation, as there are many types of positions; some posts require analytical, quantum, organic, inorganic or other types of specialised chemistry professionals. As a general rule, a Bachelors degree will be a minimum requirement for all jobseekers in this field, though additional requirements are common
The average salary for a chemist working in Britain depends largely on experience as well as the industry, qualifications and area of specialisation. Overall, figures range anywhere from about £20,000 per annum for low-level/graduate positions to £50,000 or more for highly experienced individuals, particularly in the oil industry.
