The role of a copy editor mainly entails editing documents or articles, including the format, style and accuracy of text, rather than the substance. An effective copy editor must work in direct contact with writers, and be able to evaluate a writer’s style using reports. Experience in a range of documents, including magazine and newspaper publishing, is advantageous when applying for such as position.
The main skills a copy editor should possess include an excellent command of English language and knowledge of convention rules. They should display strong critical thinking and communication skills, and have an ability to work towards and meet deadlines. A person in this role must have superb attention to detail and be flexible to fit changing styles
Usually a degree in journalism or English is sufficient educational requirements to begin working as a copy editor. However, it is recommended that persons in this job stay current with their qualifications, so attending editing certificate courses or achieving a master’s degree in journalism or English is recommended. A typical annual salary for this role is £25,000 to £30,000.
