Earth Science

Working in the earth science field means that the physical scientists will study non-living systems and focus on observing, collecting evidence, conducting experiments and developing practical applications to help create new devices.
The candidate will plan and conduct experiments to investigate scientific phenomena and analyse the data collected. Therefore, it is important to have good analytical skills, computing skills and be able to use complex instrumentation, as well as possessing the skills to extrapolate the evidence and report back to the supervisor. Excellent communication skills and writing skills are also required for those looking to access funding or apply for grants.
It is important to work in a team and be aware of others’ work already carried out in the testing and experimental stages of any given project. The ideal candidate will usually have a degree and a PhD in earth science and have relevant hands-on experience
The average annual salary for an earth scientist is £31,000, which includes profit sharing and bonuses.
