Geoscience

The highly specialised field of geoscience involves the interpretation of subsurface geological, geochemical and geophysical data giving details of the earth’s surface. The information is used as a foundation for discovering natural resources such as oil, gas and underground water supplies. Highly active in the fossil fuel sector, geoscientists determine the quality and quantity of underground resources, support risk analysis, provide geological maps and reports on potential drilling sites and advice senior management and engineers. Both production and exploration are focused on using magnetic surveys, satellite imaging and other tools
Geoscientists working on discovery of new fields can expect to travel extensively to prospective sites worldwide and may also be involved in the development of new technology. Those working with existing in-production fields will be involved in maximising delivery of remaining resources. Working conditions can be demanding and tough and overseas work often involves unsocial hours. Relevant entry-level degrees include mathematics and applied sciences, with further qualifications such as an MSc and MGeol or a Phd in a relevant discipline mandatory. Previous experience with industry-specific techniques is helpful
Salaries range from starter level at £35,000 through to senior level at around £65,000 and management level up to £120,000 and more.
