  • Shifts and family Last updated by Sharon: 20-Jan-2017

I'm training to be a hotel receptionist, and I also want to have a family. My concern is that as years go by I will not be as available as now to take evening/night shifts. Is there any regulation as to shifts?

    • As far as I know there's regulations to what can and cannot be done in terms of duration and wages. I don't think there's any regulation that stops you from agreeing with your employer that you're not doing night shifts. There are people who prefer them, though not that very many as by law there's no extra pay. Now, it's also true that if you don't want to do night shift and your employer needs somebody who can do them, not agreeing to it might result in that you don't get a job. https://www.gov.uk/night-working-hours/hours-and-limits
It's a difficult issue and a difficult decision, isn't it?

      • Thank you Sis! I'll check out the link. Yep, it's very difficult, because you'd like to have both worlds and it shouldn't be impossible. Maybe I could look around to see if I can find anybody interested in night shifts among the people I trained with or even in the training school where I'm studying... Wish me luck!
