Massage Therapist

A massage therapist is normally found working in large salons or hotel spas, and will conduct a consultation with the client before starting. Good communication skills, manual dexterity and having strong hands are a must. Experience with reflexology, aromatherapy, deep tissue massages, Indian head massage, Lomi Lomi and sports massage are the usual areas with which a person in this position needs to be familiar.
Helping clients and patients reduce stress, adding to their well-being and relieving them of aches and pains are all parts of the job of massage therapist. The candidate should be qualified in at least one of the following nationally recognised qualifications: ITEC, VTCT, NVQ, CIDESCO or CIBTAC. Practical experience is also required and a desire to learn about the physiology and anatomy of humans is a must
The working week is usually fixed at a maximum of 40 hours to reduce the chance of RSI. A newly qualified practitioner can expect an annual salary of £10,000 to 13,000, an experienced masseuse £13,000 to 16,000, and for those in management, the upper end of the salary range is £25,000.

  • Deaf massage therapist Geena

I'm trying to get a job as a massage therapist but i'm finding it very difficult and I think it's because I'm nearly deaf. Has anybody had this experience too?

    • Rhonda:

I have, indirectly. I used to work with a girl who was virtually blind. Truth is that she was very much in demand. People used to say that she had a special touch, a special skill.

      • Judith:

I’d say this is precisely because of her eyesight condition. When one of your senses is not working well or is less active than it should be, you tend to develop your other senses further as well as strategies that often compensate, when not overcompensate, for your lack. The sense of touch is essential in blind –or nearly blind- people.

        • Geena:

This is precisely how I feel about it, you really do develop an extra something that I’ve no doubt is a special gift.

          • Lina:

I agree. I’ve seen this happen over and over again. Geena, I wouldn’t let this initial lack of response stop me. I’m sure you’ll make it and, you never know, maybe it doesn’t even have anything to do with it, maybe it’s just been a coincidence. Best!

    • Geena:

Many thanks all for your feedback and support. I’m definitely going to keep at it. Thanks.
