Persons working as medical representatives help companies to gain sales contracts for supplying medical equipment, drugs and supplies to hospitals, clinics, private practices, trusts and academic institutions. They also help employers in keeping such entities and consumers informed regarding products. Many job holders in this role are referred to as medical sales representatives
Tasks associated with the position can vary, though the role often involves regular meetings with pharmacists, doctors, nurses and other medical personnel as well as creating and conducting presentations, helping in the production of promotional materials and conducting product research, and undergoing training in the effort of staying personally informed
The job requires excellent interpersonal, organisational and time management skills, and a lot of travel may be required. Typically, employers require applicants to have a degree in biology, pharmacology or a related field in addition to sales experience. Product specific training may be required or provided by some employers
The average salary for individuals working in this position is just under £30,000 per annum, though figures can range immensely as commission is a significant part of remuneration for many positions; figures as high as £65,000 and as low as £15,000 are not uncommon.
