The main duty of a steward is to provide high quality service to passengers on a train, cruise ship, or more commonly, an aeroplane. The duties of a person in this position include serving meals and beverages, providing basic first aid if required, answering queries, cleaning patron areas and bathrooms (especially onboard aircraft), and working with colleagues to ensure patrons are as safe as possible
A steward must have exceptional communication skills, and have the ability to politely deal with passengers. Nowadays, most people in this position are required to speak more than one language, as they are usually working with travelers from a variety of linguistic backgrounds. Excellent time management and organisational skills are also beneficial for candidates. In addition, applicants must be willing to work long, irregular hours
Historically, this position has not needed a degree. However, at present, most companies require a degree in some sort of related industry, such as hospitality or tourism. Training is provided prior to persons beginning employment in this field. Candidates usually have a minimum height requirement, and must pass a strength test on occasions. Salaries are generally around £25,000 to £30,000 per annum.
