Textiles

Jobs in textile manufacturing cover a wide field of expertise, including product design, technology, sales, marketing and administrative support for the manufacturing process. A number of textile manufacturing companies are still located in the traditional wool and cotton counties of Yorkshire and Lancashire, with others spread around the UK.
One of the most rewarding and sought after jobs is that of designer, requiring a key understanding of the end use of the textile as well as a design concept. Essential requirements are artistic ability, an eye for colour, pattern and texture, strong attention to detail and an understanding of different materials’ properties and the chemical content of dyes, as well as a knowledge of the production process.
Importantly, the designer must study the market and predict the next trends. The job has no formal entry-level requirements, although applicants with a relevant fashion or art degree and previous experience will be given preference. A portfolio of design work is expected at the interview, and promotion in larger firms is possible.
Salaries vary enormously, with entry-level junior machinist posts of around £15,000 and senior positions at around £40,000. For successful fashion designers, earnings can be £200,000 a year and higher.
