The main duty of a school caretaker is to oversee the maintenance, security, and cleaning of the school grounds and its buildings. Although schools have diverse desired responsibilities for the position, most employers require candidates to have a background in manual labour, trades or security.
Applicants looking for a job as a school caretaker should hold a wide variety of skills, as the position has many different roles. A candidate must be knowledgeable in the health and safety regulations of the school environment, have good do-it-yourself skills, have problem-solving attributes, and be well organised.
In general, the salary for school caretakers is around £17,000 per year, although larger schools in London and other major UK cities may offer more, including accommodation on the school grounds. Experience in a similar position is useful, as is certification in a trade, but a degree or diploma is not necessary. All applicants for positions involving access to children are now subject to a police criminal record check.
