Emergency Call Centre
Emergency call centre operatives provide the first line of communication for people in medical, fire and police emergencies as well as other emergency scenarios, ensuring the right service reaches those affected in the fastest possible time.
The 999 service for fire, police or ambulance calls is the link between the professionals and people in trouble and work here is regarded as very worthwhile although stress levels can be high. A calming and reassuring telephone manner is essential, as well as the ability to analyse risks and act fast whilst still showing empathy to the usually distressed caller.
Staff at 999 emergency centres work a shift pattern involving unsocial hours in order to provide 24-hour cover, usually on a 37.5-hour week basis. A typical shift will include taking and recording information and passing it on the relevant emergency service for swift response. Weekend shifts and holidays such as New Year and Christmas in particular will be very busy, especially for calls to the police and ambulance services, with winter the busiest time for motoring emergencies.
Salaries for the positions range between £16,000 and £19,000, rising with promotion and experience. Part-time work is usually available and pays around £9 per hour.
