  • Mental health support Last updated by Melissa: 22-Nov-2016

Only recently I discovered that I love helping others, and especially people with mental health issues. I’d like to work in this field, but the information I find can be a bit contradictory at times. Could it be that there’s no requirement for formal training to become a mental health support worker?

    • As with many other fields, it depends on the particular role. Some do not need formal training, though the candidate is expected to be literate and numerate. Having some prior experience in the field of care is always a plus. At times employers may ask for GCSE or some qualification related with the field of healthcare.

      • Thank you Melissa. Can you get work in public and/or private institutions with the requirements you say, or only for individual private patients?

        • Of course, you can officially work for institutions. Again, like everywhere else, the quality, formation and experience of the other applicants will determine the value of your candidacy every time.

If you could choose a dream job whether it be in your current field or something else what would it be?

    • My ideal job is supporting offenders leaving prison; providing 1-2-1 needs assessments/risk assessments, and supporting them to rehabilitate back into the community. I love supporting vulnerable groups and helping them to help themselves, by making a valuable contribution to society.

    • My ideal job is to be a counsellor/facilitator to help support and help people with alcohol/substance misuse problems.
