I'm mad about animals I always was and would love to work in a vets practice. I stopped studying after HS and went straight to work in a local shop. Now, after two years I'm convinced that my dream job has to be something to do with animals. I'm considering working as receptionist in a vets part time and do some training the rest of the time. Do I need specific training for the job?

    • Not medical knowledge needed, basic everyday knowledge should do. The vet is the person who'll be dealing with the medical side of things. To be a receptionist it's important that you are organised and handle your time well. Little by little you'll get familiar with the common medical concepts you my need to handle from reception.

    • You also should have good customer service skills and be able to think on your feet, besides dealing with calls and visits you're often the person who'll have to look after the gral maintenance of the place -talking about small practices here. This means dealing with suppliers and the running of the place, and visits and calls at the same time :-) It's great fun!

    • It's often helpful to have some knowledge of gral tests and surgeries as well as of the basic requirements to have a healthy pet.
