What can I do if I'd like to work as a residential support worker but have no experience?

    • Have you got any voluntary experience in the social work and care sector?

      • I’ve worked as a monitor at a summer camp for children at risk of social exclusion a couple of summers… I’ve also done the odd visit to a nursing home over the Christmas holidays, it cheered them a lot. My hope in fact is that these experiences help me get a job. Can they help although they’re not formal jobs as such?

        • they can help a lot, of course. Now, don’t mind my asking you, but are you sure that this is your thing? I’m asking because caring jobs are vocational and if it’s not your thing they can be tough on you and even worse, on those in need of care.

          • don’t worry I understand what you mean, I definitely see it’s my thing, time just flies when I’ve done it and at the end of the day I feel really alive and happy –it sounds a bit cheesy but I can’t think of a better way to explain it.

    • ah well then, in that case you know what you’re talking about. With experience you can definitely give it a go.

      • But can I if I have no certification?

        • You could take a social care course at college, not it’s not indispensable. In any case, you do need English and maths skills.

        • You also need clearance from the DBS

          • Than you for your time Lilian. I also have a driving license, which is probably a plus.

    • sure! Btw, if you’re looking to work in children’s homes, you must remember that there’s an age issue, I think that there’s a minimum age restriction of 23 years
