A competent roofer is always in demand, either for renewing roofs on properties or for installing energy saving photovoltaic (PV) cells to capture the sun’s rays. With the advent of PV, roofers who consistently turn out quality work find themselves with a wide choice of employment opportunities.
Roofers need to be familiar with all kinds of roofing materials and how to make long-lasting repairs. Familiarity with solar devices and cells, and the ability to work with an electrician when connecting household appliances and lights are an added bonus.
Successful job applicants will have extensive experience and possibly an NVQ Roofing Course or Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) qualification. Candidates who have previously worked for employers on National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) jobs and adhered to TrustMark standards are sought-after individuals in the roofing business.
Salaries for full-time incumbents range from £20,000 to £30,000 per annum, while those taken on for short contacts are paid from £8.00 to £11.00 an hour. There are job openings in all industrial and urban locations in the UK.

Forum Roofer

  • Roofer Mark

I’d like to know what qualifications I need to work as a roofer.

    • Julian:

On paper, there’s no specific qualification required for the job. But more often than not employers ask for experience.

      • Mark:

I thought it’d be something like this… Any advice on paths to gain experience?

        • Julian:

I started off as a roofing labourer and it worked very well for me. There were some other options like taking some college course on gral construction skills course. I didn’t want that, I preferred a more hands on experience.

          • Mark:

This sounds good. What are the wages like? Are they muuuuch lower that a roofer’s?

    • Julian:

Well, they can be a bit lower, but then again you’re in training. Once you gain your more senior position your pay rises. The other option is to take a course, meanwhile not earning anything, and hoping to be lucky enough to get a job straightaway…

    • Liz Todd:

Julian I would just like to comment on the info you gave Mark there. If you wish to call yourself a "qualified roofer" then you have to serve a 4 year apprenticeship gaining a City & Guilds in Roof Slating, Tiling and Cement work. Otherwise you are just someone who gives Roofers a bad name!

      • Mark:

Thank you both for your comments. I'll look into the options I have and will move from there
