Sub Editor

Newspapers, magazine and book publishers have traditionally employed a sub editor, but that sphere of work has extended into digital media so there are more opportunities available. The role of the sub is to make the initial edit on an article or written piece before it goes to the main editor, who is usually a more senior person, with more experience. Web sub editing is a slightly different skill to that required in the print media
This position is a good stepping stone to becoming a main editor, and one where the experience will prove to be very useful in the future. A degree in journalism is the main qualification, and there have to be strong word processing skills and an eye for detail. Good English language skills are important but there is some benefit in having an open mind to different styles of writing. The initial salary for a starting sub editor is in the region of £15,000, but that can rise with company progression and bonuses.
