A candidate must be knowledgeable in the health and safety regulations of the school environment, have good do-it-yourself skills, have problem-solving attributes, and be well organised.
In general, the salary for school caretakers is around £17,000 per year, although larger schools in London and other major UK cities may offer more, including accommodation on the school grounds. Experience in a similar position is useful, as is certification in a trade, but a degree or diploma is not necessary. All applicants for positions involving access to children are now subject to a police criminal record check.
