  • Being ignored Last updated by Cdora: 05-Dec-2017 View last comments

In the 10 months I have been looking for a job any hours, temp or perm the hardest thing I find to understand is being totally ignored. I know companies/agencies whatever get a lot of applicants and perhaps can't reply to everyone however the vast majority of jobs I apply for is work I have done for the last 15 years the majority working for the government.
One agency rang me about 09:15 to check my availability re a vacancy I put in for only never to hear from them again even after a query as to what was happening then another two asking for feedback as I had the right experience, and was the age the employer was looking for besides not being very professional it is downside rude and ignorance....how did they get their job !!!
I have put in for hundreds of jobs with employers and agencies what I find strange is I never get a reply you can count on one hand the unsuccessful emails I have had. Even when some agency contacts me they don't get back to you.As for equal opportunity employers I feel they discriminate more than firms that don't state they are equal ops.
I am not exaggerating I never get any response.
A world famous supermarket I applied for part time checkouts, (and I trained at M&S )didn't send me the evaluation questionnaire then rejected me because I hadn't filled it in and there is no way to contact them to let them know.
I am practically on the verge of selling my soul to the devil......but really is it worth it

    • I thoroughly agree with you Eileen, at least if it's a No then I can move on happily. I am 59 now and I am beginning to think my age is against me now.....although it shouldn't be apparently

      04-Apr-2017 Reply to Wendy
    • Yes I am having the same problem, it is soul destroying, not getting a reply, or interview when you have had many years experience. I really do feel age is a problem too, they can tell from your CV how old you are, and let's face it, they will go for younger most of the time.

      04-Apr-2017 Reply to Jillie
      • I am having the same problem too Jillie. I just want some part time work in Retail, but I cannot believe how difficult it has been. I check my job alerts every day and have put my cv into so many stores but they don't seem to acknowledge me. My confidence is going downhill rapidly

        04-Apr-2017 Reply to Wendy
        • Wendy I am sorry to learn that you are not having the success you seek. .May I ask what is your current main method of applying for jobs eg.-do you use a CV? If so, how many pages is it? I don't know if it helps but last week I saw LIDLs in Dagenham, ssex were recruiting for staff. As I recall LIDLS wanted applications in the form of a CV.

          25-Apr-2017 Reply to John K
          • Hi John,
            Thank you for your email.
I live in Crawley, West Sussex so I'm afraid Dagenham is abit far for me.
I apply for jobs with my CV and a cover letter, so they get to know my personality but I think if these companies called you in for an interview they would get a much better idea of the person who is applying for the job. I still think the old fashion way is best as the cv style seems rather unpersonal.

            27-Apr-2017
    • It is total ignorance to ignore your application. Just think yourself lucky that they did not respond, would you really want to work for an illmannered employer. It would be great if we could share potentially bad employers.

    • I know the feeling, I'm 61+, For the past 2.1/2 years I've been trying too, To know advail!, The only job's I've had, is what the Job club, have sent me on, Where You do not get paid! When you look on the net, All these supposed to be! I've Joined every job Agence, Strange when they send you jobs, Saying they're local, I go into them, Like Lidl, There not, some 40 to 70 miles away, They seem to just send them willy nilly, I recon I get about: 150 job a day sent to me! Like you say, You feel like selling your soul to the devil, Do not do it!!, The people who's in the position, telling us to apply for these job's, aren't real! Believe me, we are put on the scrap heap, they're playing Mine Games1 DO NOT DO ANYTHING FOOLISH! We are all in the same boat!!

    • I have applied for over 100 jobs part time mainly and have only had 2 interviews which I did not get. I think we are ignored especially
when you want school hours. I am in work at moment but it's not good for various
      reasons
and company selling up so I want to go into
support work within a charity field but shift
work and lack of experience in that field is
very hard. I have decided to look into
voluntary work to gain experience only to be told if I needed support from benefits while I
get back on my feet I would have to be
available for what the job centre wanted me
      to do.

    • I hafe read the comments and totally agree that there are mahy companies that never answer an application at all,I also think that many are ageist ! They read the word O'level or CSE and realise the applicant is possibly over 50 , shock horror, these people are still alive and looking for jobs . I wish some companies would not write us off so easily We Are Still With It you know! ! And are capable at keeping up with fast paced 2017 life

    • It's difficult enough to to get jobs in IT after reaching about 50 years but as n added problem you are expected to have maintained certifications such as MCSE and CCNP etc. I have taken so many of these exams Ian sick of it now (About 23 in all). They also cost £200 plus a time and companies often won't pay this. The government want to encourage people into IT so why don't they do something positive about helping people keep up to date?
I am looking for jobs away from IT now as I just don't want the hassle of studying or yet more exams.

      • I've just read through your script, The Government are playing Mind Games?, You say you've had enough of IT, Well if that is what you Know, that's what you know, All these Certificates, are all a time consuming, even to work on a building site, One needs a CSC card, What a load of ****! I was driving dumper truck's, 40 years ago!

Maybe you could even try the hospitals in the area. You never know. Best!

I am finding it very hard to find part time work in this field. I am available four days a week and the odd weekend. The problem is that I have lower back problems which means that I can't look at jobs that require standing all day. I have been in the customer service industry for over twenty years and really enjoy working with the public. I much prefer a front of house position rather than being tucked away in front of a computer all day

    • Yes I am in same position, I have worked full time for years, then the last 8 years I went part-time to have a bit more time to myself, I get a small pension as well. Got made redundant, now can't find a oart time that suits, love to get up early, get out do a good job, then have a little time to.myself. Getting desperate now. I am a very good Receptionist, Telephonist and a good typist.

    • taking care of ourselves is very important because we only had one body and life, if it is not necessary for you to find a job, better to enjoy your living because nowadays, we do not now what would happen to ourselves, earning a surplus money is useless when you get hospitalize and the doctor is happy because he is earning from you. but if you really need it and you prefer to do it home, find a not tedious home job that would earn you and at the same time enlightening you....

But what I really need is some part time work that would be so helpful. Im a hard worker and I always try my best any jobs ive done in the past I always work hard and have a positive attitude. If anyone can help me it would be fantastic I have updated cv for employer's to see and hopfully they will want to take me on.

    • My advice would be take any job you can get, full or part-time, even if you don't like the job or it's not what you really want to do, use it as a stepping stone it is a little know fact that it's much easier to find another job if you already have one,
nearly all employers will look favourably on someone already working as it shows you are able and more importantly willing to work and it also gives you an up to date work history to put on your CV and current references, a major plus for any employer.

    • here we are, work here work everywhere, but the matter is, isn't the thing that you want to do.? if that so why can i give you an advice.? but if not i think the first thing you need to look up is where you can find comfort where can you have happiness and at the same time take your priorities especially your studies, to make you easy with your studies i think you need to find a scholarship or either a grant that just not offer a tuition but the same time an allowance monthly which i have right now, with that you can stay at one work which may give you extra needs, because with your grant can make you survive your daily needs, and you can help your mother as well if there's left on your income or salary with that can make your life easy as well as your studies, nothing worries but your performance only on your academe. thanks for reading it..
