Central to the construction industry is the foreman, who is the person who ensures that the workers at a construction site are following correct work procedures and safety precautions. Incumbents are expected to assess job priorities and assign workers accordingly. They need to make sure that work is on schedule and hold meetings both with the construction crew and upper levels of management to give feedback.
A certain amount of training of new employees and instruction to site workers will also be expected. This individual needs to have a clear understanding of all issues like safety and company rules so that proper procedures are followed at all times
To be considered for this job, high school qualifications are generally required. Employers seek out individuals with excellent people skills, effective time management skills, and ample experience in the construction field. A degree in construction management and/or project management is a great advantage, but not always required. People working in this position typically make from £28,500 – £37,500 per year.

Description

A Foreman works in different capacities. He works in construction, a shop, mechanical and trade. They maintain similar responsibilities in all these sectors. They are in charge of work crews, maintaining the camaraderie, delegating responsibilities, mentoring young workers and ensuring the project is completed successfully.
Being a foreman means being able to multitask, manage high stress situations and resolving issues efficiently. It is very important that a Foreman is very aware and conversant on safety regulations and always enforces them, to ensure the safety for workers and equipment. He must also be able to manage the expenditure on the project.
A Foreman usually performs many of the following tasks:
• Attending daily briefings
• Overseeing site operations
• Supervising sub contractors and other labour workers
• Maintaining health and safety records
• Managing plant and labour returns
• Ordering and following up on site material deliveries

Education

A Foreman can have any qualifications ranging from High School Diplomas to Bachelors Degrees. They are required to have first aid certification and be SMSTS qualified. Having a CSCS card is also beneficial. Practical skills are a definite advantage. Being able to perform basic to high level repairs is also advantageous. Employers will be more likely to higher more experienced and skilled foremen.
