Candidates with BEd degrees in the core subjects of mathematics, English, science are often given priority over other individuals, but people with a BA or BSc and a PGCE who have QTS certification are also in demand.
Incumbents can expect an annual salary of between £28,000 and £39,000. There are vacancies at primary schools in cities, towns and villages all over the UK. Job-holders might be expected to attend meetings or training seminars outside term-time.
Description
Teaching children from the ages of five to eleven is the responsibility of a Primary School Teacher. These professionals work in government or private academic establishments. They use the assigned curriculum to engage students in learning their foundational courses; building their knowledge and skills to get into High Schools.
Teachers work five day weeks, for approximately eight or so hours. Time is also required to prepare lessons and monitor the student’s extracurricular activities. Their salaries are good and they get benefits such as health care, pension, insurance, vacation and maternity leave. Education
One of the first requirements for working in primary schools is to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) through Initial Teacher Training (ITT). The ITT is done at four levels:
• Undergraduate
• Postgraduate
• School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT)
• Work-based.
To pursue this training you must have Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) clearance, pass skills and numeracy tests and have your GCSEs. Having prior teaching experience is also an asset and valued by employers.
Some Primary School Teachers will follow the route of gaining a Bachelors or Masters Degree, specialising in Education courses. These studies typically take two to four years, depending on the type of degree. Some other certifications or acceptable qualifications include Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP), Registered Teacher Programme (RTP), Overseas Trained Teacher Programme (OTTP) or even Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL).
