Work in computer aided design ranges from basic drafting duties in 2D to sophisticated 3D design and modelling. Though established approaches and industry skills form the foundation of many supporting CAD/CAM roles, work can often offer challenges that require an element of artistry to achieve the greatest rewards
Work will generally require relevant education to HNC/ONC/HND level or equivalent degrees. Experience in electrical, civil or mechanical engineering is expected. Experience of industry-specific construction or fabrication demands may be needed. Experience and qualification in AutoCAD, MicroStation, Tekla, Pro-E or CATIA will almost certainly be a pre-requisite
The vast majority of roles in computer-aided design and manufacturing will demand the ability to produce accurate work to tight deadlines and meet KPIs. Knowledge of and the ability to meet various industry fabrication and quality standards may be a condition of employment
The industry offers a median salary of £20,000. Technician/operator/drafting roles typically pay salaries ranging between £15,000 and £25,000, with hourly rates on project work ranging £14 to £25. With greater experience and responsibility, roles can pay between £30,000 and £35,000.

There are relevant qualifications for this area offered by City & Guilds and BTEC including Diplomas and Certificates in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Civil Engineering Level 3, Certificate in Computer Aided Design Parametric Modelling levels 1 to 3, among other options.
